Are rice cakes allowed?
Rice cakes are a fairly low-calorie, low fat snack, so they may be a good option if you have diabetes or if you are trying to lose weight. However, controlling your portion size is still important when you choose rice cakes for a snack.
A serving size of 2 plain rice cakes (4 inches across) usually has about 15 grams of carbohydrate and 70 calories. Some brands also make mini rice cakes. The serving size and nutrition information for these products will differ slightly.
Also, some brands make various rice cake flavors such as caramel, white cheddar, etc. These flavored rice cakes will also differ when it comes to their nutrition information. They may be significantly higher in calories, carbohydrates, and sodium. So, be sure to check labels for the nutrition information before buying rice cakes. Use the nutrition information to work this snack into your meal plan.
To give your plain rice cakes more flavor, you may want to try topping them with:
- 2 tablespoons of reduced-sugar jelly or preserves
- 1 tablespoon of peanut butter or almond butter
- 2 tablespoons of hummus
- 1 tablespoon fat-free cream cheese and a few tomato slices or other non-starchy veggies
*Note that adding toppings will also add some extra calories, carbohydrates, and sometimes fat to your snack.
When buying rice cakes, try to opt for brands that are lightly salted or salt-free. You should also look for brands that are labeled “100% whole grain” or contain some whole grains.
