Can diet coke or diet drinks increase your blood glucose level?
Diet coke and most diet sodas have zero grams of carbohydrate per serving, so they will not raise blood glucose on their own. These diet drinks are different from regular soda because they are sweetened with artificial sweeteners instead of added sugars. Removing the added sugars and replacing them with artificial sweeteners removes most of the calories and carbohydrates.
When choosing what to drink, be sure to check the nutrition label to see how many grams of carb are in a serving. The American Diabetes Association recommends drinking calorie-free or very low-calorie beverages. This includes water, unsweetened teas, coffee, and diet soda. There are other options too, such as low-calorie drinks and drink mixes which can be found in most grocery stores. You can also try flavoring your water with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice for a refreshing drink with some flavor. These drinks are all great thirst-quenchers and provide almost no calories or carbohydrates, so they will not raise your blood glucose on their own.
We advise people with diabetes to avoid sugary drinks like regular soda, fruit punch, energy drinks, sweet tea, and other sugary drinks. These will raise blood glucose quickly and can provide several hundred calories in just one serving!
