Can I have lima beans at every meal? I'm trying to lose weight by eating mroe vegetables.
It is important to eat balanced meals made up of foods that fit into your diabetes meal plan. Lima beans are a starchy food, just like black, garbanzo, kidney, navy, and pinto beans. Lentils and peas are also starchy foods.
Lima beans are a source of starch, which is a form of carbohydrate and will raise blood glucose. In general, ½ cup cooked beans has about 15-20 grams of carbohydrate. However, they may vary in how much carbohydrate they contain so check the nutrition label when available. Also, when you buy canned beans, opt for lower-sodium varieties. Always thoroughly rinse canned beans with cold water before using them to remove as much sodium as possible.
Lima beans and other beans are a great source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Beans and peas are a good source of soluble fiber, so they can help protect your heart by lowering cholesterol. Lima beans are also a good source of folate and potassium.
Although they are high in starch, beans, peas, and lentils are considered a nutritious form of carbohydrate – and even people with diabetes need some carbohydrates in their diet. Starchy vegetables, fruit, low-fat milk and whole grains are also healthy carbohydrates. Make your carbs count by choosing foods from these groups and limiting less nutritious carbohydrate foods in your meal plan. Less nutritious carbohydrate sources include sweets, baked goods, refined grains, and salty snacks like chips and pretzels.
It is great that you are trying to eat more fruits and vegetables. For many people, eating more of these foods and less sweets, salty snacks, refined grains, and high-fat meats can help with weight loss. Try to include a variety of non-starchy vegetables, fruits, and starchy vegetables. Other plant-based foods that are healthy choices include beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds.
