Can you drink red wine with type 2 diabetes?
If you choose to drink alcohol, the American Diabetes Association recommends no more than 1 drink per day for women and no more than 2 drinks per day for men. One serving of wine is a 5-ounce portion or just a little more than half of a cup.
According to the Exchange Lists for Diabetes, one 5-ounce glass of dry red or white wine does not need to be counted as a source of carbohydrate. However, sweet dessert wines should be counted as about 15 grams of carbohydrate per 3.5-ounce glass.
For people with diabetes, hypoglycemia or low blood glucose can be a reaction from drinking alcohol. This is most problematic for people on insulin or those taking certain medications like sulfonylureas or meglitinides. So, it is important to avoid drinking when your blood glucose is already low or when your stomach is empty.
When you do drink alcohol, make sure you have it with a healthy snack or meal. Also, note that wine and other alcoholic beverages also contribute extra calories to our diets, which can lead to weight gain if not consumed in moderation.
