Is Domino Light okay to have if you have type 2 diabetes?
Domino Light is a newer product that is a blend of sugar and stevia. It is similar to the Splenda Sugar blend, which is part Splenda (sucralose) and part regular sugar. These types of blends can be used to replace sugar in baking or for sweetening tea or coffee. When replacing regular sugar in recipes Domino Light, replace each cup of sugar with ½ cup of Domino Light. So you end up with half the calories and carbohydrates coming from sugar in the recipe.
Remember that baking blends still have a significant amount of calories and carbohydrates that need to be considered when meal planning because they are half sugar. For reference, ½ teaspoon of Domino Light has 5 calories plus 2 grams of carbohydrate.
On its own, Stevia does not provide calories and does not have a significant effect on blood glucose levels. Like other artificial sweeteners, stevia may be a good option for people who have diabetes who are trying to cut calories and still enjoy a sweet taste. As with anything, do not go overboard when using Stevia or other artificial sweeteners.
Stevia is also referred to as Rebaudioside A, Reb-A, or rebiana. Technically, Reb-A is a highly purified product that comes from the stevia plant and is several hundred times sweeter than sugar. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Reb-A is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) as a food additive and table top sweetener. When something is generally recognized as safe by the FDA, it means that experts have agreed that it is safe for use by the public in appropriate amounts.
