Is grapefruit bad to eat when you have diabetes?
You can still eat grapefruit. Many people think that having diabetes means you need to eliminate fruit since it is a source of carbohydrate. However, even people with diabetes need some carbohydrates in their meal plan, and it is best to get them from healthy sources such as fruit, whole grains, starchy vegetables, or beans. These sources of carbohydrate also provide you with additional important nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
So, fruit can still fit into your meal plan, but you should still pay attention to portion sizes. If you eat more than your meal plan allows, you could disrupt your blood glucose control.
Half of a grapefruit usually contains about 15 grams of carbohydrate, so eating a full grapefruit will give you about 30 grams. May people like to sprinkle sugar on their grapefruit, but that will add carbohydrates.
You can enjoy the natural flavor of this tangy, sweet fruit on it’s own. If you want to add a hint of sweetness, try sprinkling a packet of zero-calorie sweetener on top.
Grapefruit is a good source of vitamin C and vitamin A. It is fat free, cholesterol-free, and sodium-free. Have half a grapefruit as a mid-morning snack or a side during lunch – wherever it fits with your meal plan!
