Is popcorn a healthy snack to eat?
Popcorn is a healthy whole-grain snack and a good source of fiber. Three cups of popped popcorn has about 15 grams of total carbohydrate and 3 grams of fiber. Measuring out portions to avoid overeating is probably a good idea because it is easy to over-indulge when snacking.
Three cups of air-popped popcorn with no fat added has less than 100 calories! If you add just a tablespoon of oil, you are adding 100 calories to your snack, so make sure this works with your meal plan.
When you make popcorn, keep it as healthy as possible by not adding too much oil or other fats. A little salt should be fine, but don’t over-do it. Just one teaspoon of salt has 2300 mg sodium! Too much salt in your diet can increase your blood pressure.
When you make kettle corn, the sugar you use will also add extra carbohydrates and calories. There are other ways you can season your snack though. Try experimenting with other low-sodium seasonings in your spice rack like cinnamon, chili powder, or salt-free seasoning mixes.
