Is stevia a safe sugar alternative for diabetics?
The sweetener stevia is made from sweet compounds that are extracted from the stevia plant. Some of the brand names for stevia include of Truvia, Steviva, SweetLeaf, or Purevia.
There was some debate in the recent past about whether or not stevia-based sweeteners should be available as artificial sweeteners in the United States. A large amount of research was rigorously reviewed and in 2008, stevia became generally recognized as safe by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Generally recognized as safe means that there is scientific evidence and experts agree that a stevia is safe for its intended use. Stevia can now be sold as a table top sweetener and companies can also use it to sweeten the products that they make.
Stevia sweeteners are zero-calorie and do not have a significant effect on blood glucose levels. Like other artificial sweeteners, stevia can be a good option for people with diabetes who are trying to cut calories and still enjoy a sweet taste. As with anything, do not go overboard when you using artificial sweeteners.
There are 5 artificial sweeteners that have been rigorously tested and approved by the FDA as food additives: acesulfame K, aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, and neotame.
