Is the sweetener Truvia safe for all diabetics both type 1 and type 2?
Truvia is made from Rebiana, the purified form of the stevia plant. You may have also heard of SweetLeaf, Purevia, or Suncrystals which are also products made with Rebiana.
There was some debate in the recent past about whether or not stevia-based sweeteners should be available as artificial sweeteners in the United States. However, stevia is now generally recognized as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This means this product can be sold as a table top sweetener and companies can also use it to sweeten the products that they make.
Truvia is a no-calorie sweetener and will not have an effect on your blood glucose levels. This can be useful, like other artificial sweeteners, for people who have diabetes. Rebiana itself does not have any calories or carbohydrates. However, note that one packet of Truvia provides 3 grams of carbohydrate because of the “filler ingredients” that are mixed with Rebiana to make it look like sugar. Other artificial sweeteners are made this way as well.
When used in excessive amounts, the carbs and calories in Truvia can add up quickly. As with anything, do not go overboard when you use it. It is new on the market, so hopefully more research will be available in the future about its effects on blood glucose in people with diabetes.
