What percentage of carbs, protein, and fat should we use?
When it comes to controlling diabetes, there is likely not one single meal plan or percentage of nutrients that works best for everyone. Research has shown that various approaches can work to help lower risk for developing diabetes and also to control diabetes.
This is why the American Diabetes Association encourages people with diabetes to work with their healthcare team to set health goals and then work on an individualized meal plan that works for them. For some, a lower-fat diet will work. But for others, a Mediterranean-type plan or a lower-carbohydrate diet will work best.
One thing that will help keep blood glucose under control is losing weight. Losing just 10-15 pounds can help you better control your blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol.
As you can see, we do not recommend a specific level or percentage. However, our recommendations do specify that people with diabetes should keep their saturated fat intake to less than 7% of their total calories. In addition, we recommend limiting trans fat intake to 2% or less of calories. Limiting these unhealthy fats can help reduce risk for heart disease or stroke, two complications that often arise with diabetes.
