Medicare Part A

What Does It Cover?

Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) provides coverage for:

  • In-patient hospital stays
  • Care in critical access hospitals
  • Skilled nursing facilities
  • Hospice care
  • Some home health care

Unsure if you have Medicare Part A coverage? Look on your red, white, and blue Medicare card. If you have Part A, you should see “Hospital (Part A)” printed on the lower left corner of your card.

How Much Does It Cost?

Most people do not have to pay a premium for Medicare Part A, because they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.  If you do not qualify for premium-free Part A, you may be able to purchase the coverage. Call your local Social Security office, or 1-800-772-1213, for more information about buying Medicare Part A coverage.
