Health Insurance Options for Self Employed or Small Business Owner or Employee
The following options are available to you:
Employer-Sponsored Coverage
The most common way that Americans get health insurance coverage is through their employer. Federal and state laws have provided employees numerous consumer protections. For additional information about employer-sponsored coverage for small-business owners/employees and the self-employed related to health reform, please go to www.healthcare.gov/foryou/small.
Groups of One
In some states, self-employed persons and small business owners can purchase a group health insurance policy that will cover just one person.
Individual Coverage
Individual health insurance policies may be an option for people who do not have access to job-based coverage. The Affordable Care Act, the federal health reform law enacted in 2010, provides new protections and improves access to affordable coverage options.
High-Risk Pools
Currently, over 30 states offer high-risk pools as a health insurance option for persons who are otherwise unable to qualify for health insurance coverage.
Prescription Assistance
Most pharmaceutical companies have established patient assistance programs to help uninsured individuals get the medications that they need to stay healthy.
If you or your loved one is unable to see a physician due to the cost of care, there may be a local community health clinic in your area. These clinics generally are free to patients or require a very small fee. Find a clinic in your area.
