For most of his adult life, Bret Michaels was in the public spotlight for his music as lead singer for the heavy metal band Poison.
However, his work on the VH1 reality show Rock of Love and his boardroom chats with Donald Trump on NBC's Celebrity Apprentice began to shed light on his type 1 diabetes, which he's lived with since he was 6 years old.
Michaels has donated the $140,000 he's won on the show thus far to support the American Diabetes Association, the leading provider of diabetes camps for children.
More recently he has been in the public eye due to his health battles, first with appendicitis and then with a brain hemorrhage, which had him fighting for his life. He appeared on Oprah on May 19 to talk about that medical emergency.
Earlier this year, he spoke with the American Diabetes Association's magazine, Diabetes Forecast, about his music, his diabetes, and his TV career. The magazine also has an update on his condition and his victory on the season finale of NBC's Celebrity Apprentice, which aired on Sunday, May 23.
