Cinnamon Promising Blood Sugar-Lowering Agent

Recent research has shown that cinnamon may help control blood sugar levels by sensitizing insulin.

A team of U.K. scientists conducted a review of eight studies, examining cinnamon's ability to reduce blood glucose in people with and without type 2 diabetes.  Two of the studies showed that cinnamon lowered blood sugar levels better than placebo, and another study showed reductions of 18 percent to 29 percent in fasting blood glucose levels.  Another study found decreases of about 10 percent, and while one of the studies in people without diabetes indicated that cinnamon lowered blood sugar by 8.4 percent.

The authors noted that although cinnamon's role as anti-diabetes treatment cannot be concluded definitively, "it does possess blood sugar lowering properties and potential to reduce postprandial blood glucose levels."  The findings are published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism.
