Fats in Blood Useful for Screening Overweight Children

Use of markers of dyslipidemia to identify overweight youth with insulin resistance, by T.S. Hannon and colleagues. Pediatr Diabetes 7:260?266, 2006.

What is the problem and what is known about it so far?

As the problem of overweight and obesity among children gets worse, many doctors are concerned that these kids will face diabetes and related problems in the future. Tests to assess the body?s ability to handle glucose and insulin are complicated and costly. Even when these tests are done, the results aren?t always consistent and reliable in children.

A simpler and less expensive test to screen children at risk of future problems would be very useful for focusing prevention and treatment efforts.

Why did the researchers do this particular study?

The researchers wanted to see whether measuring fats in the blood is useful for identifying children with insulin resistance, a condition in which the body does not handle insulin well. Insulin resistance often leads to diabetes.

Who was studied?

The study included 35 overweight white children who were an average of 13.5 years old.

How was the study done?

Researchers reviewed records of the children for links between insulin resistance and high levels of fats in the blood. Information about the patients? height and weight also were recorded.

What did the researchers find?

Children with high levels of fats in the blood had much worse insulin resistance than those with normal levels.

What were the limitations of the study?

The number of children in the study was small. A similar study with more children may show different results. The study also included only white children, and may not apply to other groups.

What are the implications of the study?

Tests for levels of fats in the blood may be useful for identifying children likely to develop diabetes later in life. These children may benefit from prevention and treatment before serious medical problems appear.
