We provide support to select federally-funded research programs that hold significant promise to positively affect the lives of individuals with diabetes or those at risk for developing the disease.
This funding mechanism allows us to provide additional funding to expand on a basic science study or clinical trial and obtain even more data and important research results than would have been possible without our donation.
ACCORD-MIND
The Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) study sponsored by NHLBI and NIDDK, seeks to prevent heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes by using intensive glycemic, blood pressure, and lipid management. ADA-funded researcher, Santica Marcovina, PhD from The University of Washington in Seattle, is currently conducting the ACCORD-MIND study, “Physiologic mediators of change in brain structure and function of diabetic patients”.

There are currently only two approved drug therapies for children with type 2 diabetes: metformin and insulin. Yet experience with adults with diabetes demonstrates that, over time, it becomes harder to control blood glucose with only a single medication.
