The American Diabetes Association Kicks Off Annual American Diabetes Month®

Today, the American Diabetes Association launches American Diabetes Month® with a host of online and offline activities designed to focus the nation’s attention on the issues surrounding diabetes and those who live with it each and every day.
“Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes®. It is our responsibility to ensure that our youth have the right guidance and resources to get healthy,” said Larry Hausner, CEO, American Diabetes Association. “It is through our awareness activities surrounding American Diabetes Month that we hope to call greater attention to this epidemic that is facing our nation.”
We have major events happening nationwide:
• Facebook Photo Mosaic with CVS/pharmacy®: The Association is asking people to upload images that represent what A Day in the Life of Diabetes means to them at facebook.com/AmericanDiabetesAssociation. For every photo uploaded, CVS/pharmacy will donate $1 to the Association, up to $25,000.
• Large-scale Outdoor Mosaic Projection: The images uploaded to the mosaic on the Association’s Facebook page will be projected on the interior of Union Station in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 13 and 14, coinciding with World Diabetes Day.
“Today, nearly 26 million adults and children in the U.S. have diabetes and an additional 79 million have prediabetes,” said Geralyn Spollett, MSN, ANP-CS, CDE, President, Health Care & Education, American Diabetes Association. “This month, we hope to raise the profile of this insidious disease in the hearts and minds of people here at home, and around the globe.”
“Every day in our pharmacies, we help patients with diabetes and caregivers on their path to better health,” said Papatya Tankut, RPh, VP Pharmacy Professional Services, CVS/pharmacy. “We are proud to be a part of an inspiring campaign that draws attention to the challenges people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes face on a daily basis.”
