12 People to Know in the Diabetes World
Sierra Sandison launched a wave of diabetes pride when she visibly wore her insulin pump while competing in—and winning—the Miss Idaho pageant in July 2014. A photo of Sandison striding proudly across the stage became an Internet sensation and garnered her plenty of new fans as she went on to the Miss America pageant a couple months later. Sandison is one of the many all-stars featured in the October 2014 issue of Diabetes Forecast®, the Healthy Living Magazine of the American Diabetes Association.

American Diabetes Association Releases Position Statement on Diabetes Management in the Childcare Setting
Very young children with diabetes have legal protections and can be safely cared for by childcare providers with appropriate training, access to resources and a system of communication with parents and the child’s diabetes provider, according to a position statement being published in the October issue of Diabetes Care.

La Asociación Americana de la Diabetes Celebra el Mes de la Hispanidad
La Asociación Americana de la Diabetes (Asociación) está celebrando el Mes de la Hispanidad con el objetivo de informar a todas las personas con diabetes tipo 2 sobre la importancia de incrementar su nivel de actividad física y comer alimentos y comidas más saludables para ponerle un Alto a la Diabetes. Entre el 15 de septiembre y el 15 de octubre, la Asociación realizará actividades y promoverá recursos a lo largo del país para demostrar el beneficio que brinda tener una vida activa y comer mejor calidad de alimentos para controlar la diabetes y reducir el riesgo de desarrollar serias complicaciones.

American Diabetes Association Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
The American Diabetes Association (Association) is kicking off a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by calling on people with type 2 diabetes to increase their physical activity and eat healthier to Stop Diabetes. From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, the Association will conduct activities and highlight resources across the country that showcase the benefits of being active and eating healthy to manage their diabetes and reduce their risk of developing diabetes complications.

Subway Development Corporation of Washington, D.C. Donates $350,000 to Stop Diabetes®
The American Diabetes Association (Association) is pleased to announce a $350,000 donation from the McLean, Virginia-based Subway Development Corporation of Washington (SDC) on behalf of the Subway restaurants in the Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. region. The check was presented to the Association yesterday at SDC’s 17th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, where proceeds from the event also benefitted the Association.

American Diabetes Association and Takeda Launch ConnecT2DayTM to Encourage Better Self-Management by Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
Today, the American Diabetes Association (Association) and Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc. (Takeda) unveiled ConnecT2DayTM, a program based on innovative research that offers new tools for health care professionals (HCPs) who are looking for additional ways to partner with patients in managing their type 2 diabetes. ConnecT2Day gathered input from both patients and HCPs through instant response dial testing and a nationwide survey, and identified important insights and optimal language to help guide conversations between HCPs and patients with type 2 diabetes.

American Diabetes Association Announces Interim CEO
The American Diabetes Association (Association) today announced that Suzanne Berry, MBA, CAE has been named interim chief executive officer until a permanent CEO is appointed, effective August 1, 2014. Earlier this month, current CEO Larry Hausner announced that he will be stepping down from that role effective July 31.

Diabetes Among Hispanics: All Are Not Equal
People of Hispanic and Latino origin are at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes and related cardiometabolic abnormalities, but the risk varies considerably among specific ethnic groups and other factors, such as the length of time they have been living in the United States, according to two studies and an accompanying commentary being published in the August issue of Diabetes Care®.

Larry Hausner, CEO of the American Diabetes Association (Association) has announced that he will step down as CEO of the Association effective July 31, 2014 to pursue new opportunities in his native New York metro area. On behalf of the Association, and the nearly 30 million people in the United States with diabetes, the Board of Directors would like to thank Mr. Hausner for his seven years of service.
