Economic Burden of Prediabetes Up 74 Percent Over Five Years
The economic burden of diabetes in America continues to climb, exceeding more than $322 billion in excess medical costs and lost productivity in 2012, or more than $1,000 for every American, according to a study being published in the December issue of Diabetes Care that also includes a state-by-state breakdown of the prevalence and costs associated with diabetes. Additionally, increased costs associated with prediabetes and undiagnosed diabetes highlight the growing importance of prevention and early intervention.

Sierra Sandison launched a wave of diabetes pride when she visibly wore her insulin pump while competing in—and winning—the Miss Idaho pageant in July 2014. A photo of Sandison striding proudly across the stage became an Internet sensation and garnered her plenty of new fans as she went on to the Miss America pageant a couple months later. Very young children with diabetes have legal protections and can be safely cared for by childcare providers with appropriate training, access to resources and a system of communication with parents and the child’s diabetes provider, according to a position statement being published in the October issue of Diabetes Care.

American Diabetes Association Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
The American Diabetes Association (Association) is kicking off a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by calling on people with type 2 diabetes to increase their physical activity and eat healthier to Stop Diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (Association) is pleased to announce a $350,000 donation from the McLean, Virginia-based Subway Development Corporation of Washington (SDC) on behalf of the Subway restaurants in the Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. region. The check was presented to the Association yesterday at SDC’s 17th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, where proceeds from the event also benefitted the Association.

American Diabetes Association and Takeda Launch ConnecT2DayTM to Encourage Better Self-Management by Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
Today, the American Diabetes Association (Association) and Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc. (Takeda) unveiled ConnecT2DayTM, a program based on innovative research that offers new tools for health care professionals (HCPs) who are looking for additional ways to partner with patients in managing their type 2 diabetes. ConnecT2Day gathered input from both patients and HCPs through instant response dial testing and a nationwide survey, and identified important insights and optimal language to help guide conversations between HCPs and patients with type 2 diabetes.
