National Achievement AwardsBanting Medal for Scientific Achievement The Banting Medal for Scientific Achievement is the Association's highest honor for scientific achievement. Named after Frederick G. Banting, the co-discoverer of insulin, this award recognizes highly meritorious career achievement in the field of diabetes research. Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award The Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award is presented to an individual medical researcher under age 45 who has made an outstanding contribution to diabetes research that demonstrates both originality and independence of thought. The award is sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company. Kelly West Award for Outstanding Achievement in Epidemiology The Kelly West Award for Outstanding Achievement in Epidemiology is given in honor of Kelly West, widely regarded as the "father of diabetes epidemiology," to an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of diabetes epidemiology. Outstanding Physician Clinician in Diabetes The Outstanding Physician Clinician in Diabetes Award was established to stimulate, acknowledge, and reward outstanding physician clinicians in the field of diabetes. Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award The Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award is presented to a distinguished health professional who has made outstanding educational efforts in the field of diabetes. Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes The Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes is named for Harold Rifkin, MD, distinguished clinician and former president of the American Diabetes Association. It is awarded to an individual whose outstanding service in the cause of diabetes has been performed with an international perspective and with international impact. Albert Renold Award The Albert Renold Award is named for Professor Renold, renowned diabetologist and researcher. The award is given to an individual whose career is distinguished by outstanding achievements in the training of diabetes research scientists or the facilitation of diabetes research by diabetes investigators. Charles H. Best Medal for Distinguished Service in the Cause of Diabetes The Charles H. Best Medal for Distinguished Service in the Cause of Diabetes is named for Dr. Best, the co-discoverer of insulin. The award honors distinguished service in the field of diabetes, including both scientific and non-scientific endeavors. Outstanding Service in Diabetes Research Funding This award is given in recognition of meritorious service and exceptional leadership in fund raising for diabetes research. Addison B. Scoville Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service The Addison B. Scoville Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service is named for Dr. Scoville, former president of the American Diabetes Association, and is given for outstanding service by a board or committee member. Wendell Mayes, Jr. Medal The Wendell Mayes, Jr., Medal is named for Mr. Mayes, a past chair of the board and longtime volunteer for the American Diabetes Association. It is awarded to a non-health professional volunteer for outstanding service in the cause of diabetes. C. Everett Koop Medal for Health Promotion and Awareness The C. Everett Koop Medal for Health Promotion and Awareness honors excellence in wellness promotion and disease prevention. Named for former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Koop, the award is not limited to efforts in diabetes. Charles H. Best Medal for Service (to outgoing Chair of the Board) The Charles H. Best Medal for Service is awarded to the chair of the board of the American Diabetes Association upon leaving office. Named for Dr. Best, the co-discoverer of insulin, this award recognizes meritorious service on behalf of the Association and Americans with diabetes. Rachmiel Levine Award for Service (to outgoing President, Health Care & Education) The Rachmiel Levine Medal for Service is awarded to the president, health care & education, of the American Diabetes Association upon leaving office. Named for Dr. Levine, the diabetes researcher who discovered how insulin works, and a former American Diabetes Association president, this award recognizes meritorious service on behalf of the Association and Americans with diabetes.
