Question:

Are there any useful herbal remedies for diabetes?

Answer:

None that have proven themselves to be effective. Diet or herbal remedies were all we had for most of the 2,000 years since diabetes was first described. Health food stores carry dozens of products designed for people with diabetes to use, ranging from blueberry leaf and wild cherry bark to preparations called "Hyglucose" and "Loglucose." Few of these products have been tested or proven to be safe and effective. Because herbal remedies are classified as food supplements, they are not regulated by the FDA. Moreover, none of these products alone result in adequate blood glucose control in most people with diabetes. You should discuss any diabetes-related health food products with your health care team. You may find that they are somewhat skeptical, but they will probably not object to the use of these products in moderation if you are demonstrating good control of your diabetes and doing the other things necessary to stay healthy with diabetes.
