Safe Exercise Checklist

Before you head out the door to walk, ride your bike, or play your favorite sport, check this list of things to do before you exercise.

  • Check your blood glucose
  • Blood glucose a little low?  Have a snack!
  • Blood glucose really low? Treat yourself for hypoglycemia and then eat a snack.
  • Wait until you feel better to exercise.
  • Blood glucose pretty high? Check for ketones.
  • Are your ketones moderate or high? DO NOT EXERCISE. Treat your ketones as recommended by your doctor.

Pack a backpack or duffel bag with the following:

  • Glucose tablets, hard candy, or a juice box
  • Crackers and cheese, a sandwich, or some other healthy snack
  • Your glucose meter and supplies
  • A big bottle of water
  • Make sure you're wearing an ID bracelet that says you have diabetes.
  • Drink a glass of water before you go.
  • Don't forget to bring your backpack!

Ask your doctor what blood glucose level is high enough that you should check ketones and what blood glucose level means you should treat for hypoglycemia.
