The ADA Weighs in for Public Health

October 28, 2019

This month, the ADA called on federal regulators to ensure that upcoming revisions to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and proposed revisions to cigarette warning labels are science-based.

The ADA submitted its latest round of comments to the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, a team of experts advising the federal government on revision of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Drawing on the 2019 Standards of Care and recent consensus report on Nutrition Therapy for Adults with Diabetes and Prediabetes, the comments stressed the opportunity to promote healthful shifts in consumption of food and beverages in a variety of dietary patterns and identify complementary actions that address the social determinants of health.

And in response to a new FDA proposal to update the warning labels on cigarettes, the ADA offered its support for timely implementation of more effective warning labels and provided information to guide accurate warnings regarding the diabetes-related health risks associated with smoking.
