Safe at School Initiative

February 25, 2020

Pediatric providers attending ADA’s Post-Graduate Course in San Francisco last month (January 31) gathered to learn more about how to advocate on behalf of their patients in the school and daycare settings. Dr. Fran Cogen, Diabetes Center Director at Children’s National Medical Center and ADA school volunteer, and Crystal Woodward, Director of Safe at School, joined together to provide an overview of legal protections for children with diabetes, how to develop and use written plans, and available resources to enable attendees to better advocate for their patients.  A post-session discussion centered around strategies for the use of CGM data at school, needed support for self-managing students, and the role of the provider in training school nurses and staff.  Attendees were awarded continuing education credits and encouraged to join ADA’s legal advocacy provider network. More information about Safe at School may be found at diabetes.org/safeatschool or by contacting Crystal Woodward at CWoodward@diabetes.org.
